COLUMBIA, S.C. — Appalachian State has company atop the Southern Conference this preseason.
While the six-time defending league champion Mountaineers were the pick of conference coaches, the league media had Georgia Southern as the favorite to win its first title since 2004. The Eagles advanced the furthest of the three Southern Conference teams that reached last year’s Football Championship Series playoffs, reaching the semifinals before falling to Delaware.
Georgia Southern held a five-point lead over Appalachian State in the voting. The Eagles shared the title with Furman seven years ago, their last league championship.

The poll was released Tuesday as the Southern Conference held its preseason media teleconference for its football schools.

Wofford was picked to finish third by both the coaches and media. The Terriers also made the playoffs last season.
