ATLANTA — Georgia High School Association officials say they have commissioned a study on the causes of heat-related illnesses and injuries.
WGCL-TV reports that the study is expected to be completed later this year and will be the first of its kind to focus on high school athletes. Two Georgia high school football players have died in recent days, one of them after he collapsed while leaving the field after practice.
Authorities say Forrest Jones, a 16-year-old student at Locust Grove High School, died Tuesday night at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Another Georgia player, 16-year-old Don’terio J. Searcy of Fitzgerald High School, died following practice Tuesday morning at a football camp in Lake City, Fla.
