Up to 50 face layoffs at Savannah River Site

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — Layoffs are coming next week at the Savannah River Site near Aiken.

The Aiken Standard reported (http://bit.ly/tNojh7) that the company that runs the old nuclear weapons plant, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, says no more than 50 employees will be affected.

The company had announced last year that about 1,400 employees would lose their jobs over the coming year. That total will actually be just under 1,100 employees by the end of the year.

Company spokesman DT Townsend says the layoffs will begin Monday.

Townsend says there may be some minor workforce adjustments next year. .

Another contractor at the plant that handles liquid waste, Savannah River Remediation, says it will eliminate about 80 positions later this month or in January.
