Mike Reed, general manager of NeSmith Chevrolet in Hinesville, has announced that the dealership is hosting the Cub Scout’s Pinewood Derby Coastal Empire Council Championship from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the dealership on Highway 84 East in Flemington.
Forty-five boys from first to fifth grade will compete for the coveted Pinewood Derby Council Championship. The council includes Cub Scout packs from 11 Southeast Georgia counties.
The Derby begins with races within each local Cub Scout Pack.
The top three finishers from each grade level advance to the District Pinewood Derby.  From there, district winners proceed to the council championship.
First, second and third place awards will be presented for each grade level.  The top three overall racers will also receive an award.
Reed said, “We’re thrilled to host such a wholesome family event. It’s great fun to to support The Boy Scouts of America.”
Jim Arnold, Pinewood Derby chairman, said, “The Pinewood Derby allows the kids to have a lot of fun, learn about friendly competition and sportsmanship, and allows the boys to get creative and construct a car out of a piece of pinewood with their parents.”
