On April 13, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Griffin Park Gravity Sewer System, located in the Griffin Park subdivision, experienced a wastewater sewer release. The released wastewater may have reached state waters, resulting in a spill.

The spill was caused by a malfunctioning multi-probe level controller which failed to start the pumps, along with a communication failure that prevented staff from being notified of the issue. The total amount released was estimated at 18,000 gallons. The wastewater discharged to an unnamed tributary leading to Mills Creek.

Staff have replaced the controller, resolved the communications issue, and cleaned the affected site. Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and Liberty County Health Department have been notified of the spill.
