Calling all superheroes
great american cleanup KLB

Our annual Great American Cleanup in Liberty County will officially begin March 19.

The cleanup, which is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, is our country’s largest community improvement program. GAC kicks off in more than 20,000 communities this spring. This national cleanup effort engages 4 million volunteers working together to improve their communities by creating positive change with a lasting impact.

Locally, we are looking for superheroes to help us fight that evil villain, Litter, in public places and green spaces. Superheroes, we need you to fight for our planet by cleaning up our environment. So, this year’s annual Great American Cleanup is really all about bringing out the superhero in each of us.

A variety of area cleanup events offer plenty of convenient opportunities for superheroes to use their superpowers to eradicate litter in our community.

Here are the dates for our events:
• March 19, Midway
• March 19, Gum Branch
• April 9, East End cleanup/geocache kickoff
• April 9, Riceboro
• April 16, Hinesville
• April 30, Walthourville
• April 30, Allenhurst

But don’t be alarmed if you would prefer to exert your superpowers in your own neighborhood. We encourage our local superheroes to take their efforts home, if they prefer, to organize cleanups on their own blocks or in their favorite green spaces — a “Clean Up Your Block Party”! Your “CYOBP” can happen in your own neighborhood with a street cleanup or a beautification project, or you can take your “party” to a local green space or park to spruce things up. We can support cleanup events for local neighborhoods or schools or organizations or businesses wherever and whenever you feel super. Superheroes are needed to fight litter everywhere.

Once you’ve had your event, we encourage you to celebrate your hard work and accomplishments with neighbors, friends and family. Fighting litter is always party-worthy! Time to party!

Keep Liberty Beautiful can provide supplies to enhance your superpowers at cleanups large and small. We can loan out litter reachers, work gloves and safety vests as well as provide garbage bags and water for you and your fellow superheroes. At each of our citywide cleanups, our local cities provide a thank-you picnic for volunteers after the cleanups are completed. All registered volunteers will receive official superhero Great American Cleanup T-shirts, too.

Litter keeps our community from reaching its potential. Cleanup volunteers on the roads also make a powerful statement in the fight against litter. Volunteering in the fight against litter is truly a struggle between good and evil worthy of any superhero.

So take a good look in the mirror. Are you one of the heroes we are looking for?
