History tour scheduled for Sapelo Island

SAPELO ISLAND — As part of its yearlong celebration of 40 years of research, education, stewardship and training programs, the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve will offer a public tour of the island, which will include a lecture by historian and past SINERR manager Buddy Sullivan from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Sullivan, who was manager of the reserve from 1993 to 2012, will share a slide show and discuss the history of the reserve.

Sullivan has written several area and statewide histories. He served on the Board of Curators of the Georgia Historical Society and currently is the senior historian of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, president of the Lower Altamaha Historical Society, and is a member of the Georgia Historical Society, the United States Naval Institute and the Savannah Council of the Navy League of the United States.

Cost is $15 per person, which includes the lecture, a guided tour, and refreshments at the Reynolds Mansion. Reservations are required, and space is limited.

To make reservations, call the Sapelo Island Visitor Center at 912-437-3224. Guests will receive detailed ferry instructions and directions at the time of reservation.
