Beach Music Festival set for Jekyll

JEKYLL ISLAND — The 26th annual Beach Music Festival on Jekyll Island will feature a barbecue bash this year, sanctioned by the Georgia BBQ Association. Other new signature events will add layers of fun, flare and a taste of the South to the already-popular beach music event.
Each year, scores of beach music fans gather from all over the region for free concerts on the beach, shag lessons and more. This year, activities like the new barbecue bash, a barbecue and wine tasting, and a Beach Music Festival golf tournament will spice up the weekend.
The festival kicks off Thursday, Aug. 20, with an early bird party at the Oceanside Inn and Suites on Jekyll Island. For $10 per person, guests can enjoy a cookout by the pool and beach music by DJ George Perkins from 7-10 p.m. For reservations, call (912) 635-3636 or go to jekyllisland.com/beachmusicfestival.
On Friday at 6 p.m., there will be a barbecue and wine tasting, sponsored by Southern Soul BBQ and The Still and Winery. The pre-concert event will include sample barbecue from Southern Soul restaurant and wine from The Still and Winery of St. Simons Island. The event is at the Jekyll Island Golf Course. The Jekyll Island Beach Music Festival golf tournament is from 9-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Call the Jekyll Island Golf Pro Shop at (912) 635-2368 to register for the two-person scramble on Jekyll Island’s course, Pine Lakes. Participants can make their own arrangements or let Jekyll Island’s golf staff pair you with three others. The entry fee is $55 per person, which includes green fees, half of a cart rental fee, beverages, prizes and two tickets to the Friday night Swingin’ Medallions concert.
The weekend’s signature concert and dance will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 in the Atlantic Hall of the Jekyll Island Convention Center.
Tickets are $12 in advance or $14.95 after Aug. 20 and at the door. Tickets can be purchased by calling (912)635-3636 or online at JekyllIsland.com/beachmusicfestival. Guests must be at least 21 years old and the attire is casual.
The barbecue bash is Saturday, Aug. 22, next to the Jekyll Island beach deck. For shagging tips from the pros, guests can sign up for lessons on Saturday morning in the Atlantic Hall of the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance or at the door.
After a day in the sun, dancers can shag dance into the night with Jim Quick and Coastline, a band with a blend of soul, blues and rock.
The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. in the Atlantic Hall of the Jekyll Island Convention Center. Tickets are $12 per person before Aug. 20 and $14.95 after Aug. 20 and at the door. The evening will also feature the annual Shag Dance Competition, typically pulling the best dancers that this region has to offer. Entry fees are $10 per couple.
