Exhibit to benefit Glynn music programs

Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association is proud to present a new exhibit that will not only delight admirers of both fine art photography and contemporary music but will also lead to benefits for music education programs in Glynn County schools. "The Art of Music," an exhibit of photos by Randall Hollis inspired by music (including stunning shots of notable musicians in performance), opens at the Gallery in the Ritz Theatre on July 11. All monies beyond initial project funding by Caja Logistics and Anchor Shipping Group, including corporate and private sponsorships and sales of photographic prints, will be divided evenly between the music departments at Brunswick High School and Glynn Academy.
"This is an exploration of some of the basic capabilities of the digital darkroom and my homage to the artists and instruments that give us the music," said Hollis, whose extensive background in natural history-oriented art photography shifted in recent years from film to digital technology and from meditative nature subjects to handheld performance shots. "My love of music had me out shooting people playing, close ups of instruments, all sorts of things.  I showed some of the early efforts to some of the musicians I photographed, and they encouraged me to continue.  I have recently begun to learn the bass, so music education was already on my mind when my friend Donna McCollum remarked there ought to be some way to use the show of my work to help music education here.  The benefit was my answer."
The work on display at the Ritz ranges from straightforward black-and-white portraiture (such as Hollis's photo of musician David Grisman) to moody color manipulations to unique motion studies (such as a photo of Danny "Mudcat" Dudek playing guitar).
The exhibit opens with a reception on Friday, July 11 from 5-7 p.m. that is free and open to the public.  In addition to light refreshments, guests can enjoy performances by local musicians The O'Reallys.
"The Art of Music" is on display at the Ritz through Aug. 9. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, call GIAHA at 912-262-6934 or visit goldenislesarts.org.
