Many of the world’s cultures can be found in all corners of Liberty County, but on Saturday they’ll be front and center, showcasing talent and tradition for the Small World Festival in downtown Hinesville.
In 2009, the second year for Hinesville Downtown Development Authority to host the festival, nearly 5,000 people came out to celebrate and be entertained by representatives of the multicultural community. As a result, the festival now includes additional groups and a second entertainment venue.
HDDA Executive Director Vicki Davis said the festival’s popularity has grown by leaps and bounds in a short time.
“Just after one year of having the event, we were able to double the event area and expand it by two hours, so we’re excited about that,” Davis said.
This year’s festival, from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at Bradwell Park, is scheduled to include a world marketplace, international food court and entertainment. Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas will kick off the day with a welcome to guests at 11:20 a.m.; performances are scheduled to be held throughout the day.
The world marketplace is a vendor showcase of crafts, artwork and merchandise from various countries that will also include demonstrations and children’s activities. Represented continents and nations include Africa, Peru, Puerto Rico, France, India, the Middle East and South Asia.
“What makes the Small World Festival so unique from other international cultural celebrations is that we feature our own local groups,” Davis said. “We’re real proud of the different cultural groups we have that are represented from within the community.”
Visitors can taste foods from around the globe as well; vendors will be serving Polynesian, Peruvian, Caribbean and German foods, among others.
