The film of the week is “The King’s Speech,” and that’s not just here, but across the media sphere, too. The film garnered 12 — count ’em, 12 — Oscar nominations, four Screen Actors Guild nominations, and a Golden Globe win for star Colin Firth.
You should definitely watch this well-crafted, infectious drama and I’ll tell you why.
In the “King’s Speech,” Colin Firth is King George VI of England. That’s the current Queen Elizabeth’s father for those of you who need a frame of reference. When he inherits the throne after his father’s death and his brother’s abdication, his country is in desperate need of leadership because Hitler is threatening war on Europe.
Problem is, King George has a vicious stutter and can’t deliver a speech to save his life. It’s a good thing his wife has hired a peculiar Australian man to help coach him.
Revisiting the trailer alone makes me want to cry now that I’ve enjoyed this film. I haven’t seen a historical drama this good since “Seabiscuit.” The two themes of this film are the power of true friendship and finding the strength within one’s self to overcome adversity. It takes guts.
And I’m a fan!
In fact, Geoffrey Rush is my pick for best supporting actor — big time!
