A documentary on a fan film that took more than 30 years to finish leads movies on DVD this week.
Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (MVD/Drafthouse, 2016, not rated/probable PG, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, featurettes, bloopers, trailers; 16-page booklet). After viewing Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, three 11-year-olds set out over the next few summers to meticulously remake it, but they cant figure out how to pull off the exploding plane. Thirty years later, they reunite and attempt to film the plane explosion and complete their movie.
This documentary is essentially a movie about a movie made by kids in love with a movie a valentine, if you will, to fan culture as it crosses over into obsession.
A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits (Warner, 2016, PG, deleted scenes, featurettes, bloopers, music videos). This is the fourth film in the Cinderella Story franchise. The first film was a theatrical comedy and the straight-to-video sequels are musicals. Here, Sofia Carson stars as a young woman working as an assistant to her evil stepmother (Jennifer Tilly) and her twin stepsisters as they prepare for a musical Cinderella contest.
Demolition (Fox, 2016, R for language and drugs). An investment banker (Jake Gyllenhaal) whose wife has died in an auto accident cant control his grief, which manifests itself in a variety of destructive ways, from befriending a stranger (Naomi Watts) and her son (Judah Lewis) to alienating his father-in-law (Chris Cooper) to destroying his home. Features good performances, but the tone is muddled and confusing.
Sky (IFC, 2016, not rated/probable R for sex, nudity, language). During a vacation in California, a Parisian couple violently breaks up, which sends the wife (Diane Kruger) to Las Vegas on a voyage of discovery. Lou Diamond Phillips and Lena Dunham have supporting roles.
11 Minutes (Sundance Selects, 2016, not rated/probable R for sex, nudity, language, violence; in English and in Polish with English subtitles, trailer). Veteran Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski concocted this series of overlapping vignettes that eventually converge (though not as expected) but the characters in this confused narrative are unpleasant a sleazy filmmaker, a drug dealer, a potential robber, etc.
Sundown (Lionsgate, 2016; R for sex, nudity, language, drugs; deleted scenes, featurette). After the girl of his dreams announces shes heading to Puerto Vallarta for spring break, a high school nerd and his buddy follow, but soon they are mixed up with Mexican gangsters. It's another raunchy farce in the wake of the Hangover films, with Camilla Belle, Sara Paxton and Teri Hatcher in support.
