Two attorneys have filed candidate qualifications to run for the open Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s spot.

Richard Braun, the current McIntosh County solicitor general and also an assistant district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, filed his paperwork Monday. That circuit covers Appling, Camden, Glynn, Jeff Davis and Wayne counties. He is also former city manager for Darien. Braun, a Liberty County native, received his law degree from Ole Miss.

Current Atlantic Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Laurie Baio also qualified Monday to run for the post. Baio, a graduate of Brooklyn Law School, currently is assigned to the Bryan and McIntosh team at the DA’s office.

The special election will be November 3. The seat became open when Gov. Brian Kemp appointed Billy Joe Nelson, who had been the district attorney, to a superior court judge seat in the circuit. Nelson had been unopposed in the primary and in the general election. He was chosen to fill the seat of Judge Robert Russell III, who retired.

The Atlantic Judicial Circuit covers Bryan, Evans, Liberty, Long, McIntosh and Tattnall counties.
