Two arrests were made in the shooting death of a Savannah man who was shot while involved in an alleged home invasion on Fleming Loop Road On May 20.
According to Stewart Cottingham, Supervisory Inspector, United States Marshall’s Services Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, one of the two suspects, Christopher Grass was arrested June 12 on a murder warrant for the homicide of John Evers, 51, of Savannah during an alleged home invasion on the 900 block of Fleming Loop Road in East Liberty County. Cottingham said Grass was spotted leaving a residence which was under surveillance in Port Wentworth and followed to a residence in Garden City where he was arrested without incident.
Grass is facing charges for aggravated assault, murder, and home invasion. He is currently being housed at the Liberty County Jail in Hinesville.
The murder charge stems from an allegation Grass was involved in the home invasion which led to the death of Evers following a gun fight by the home owner who, according to Liberty County authorities, was defending his home.
Dustin Lax, a Savannah resident, has been charged with murder, assault and home invasion in the same alleged home invasion on Fleming Loop Road in Liberty County.
Lax, according to the Bluffton Today newspaper, was apprehended in Jasper County, South Carolina on May 24. Bluffton Today reported that Lax was captured around 12 p.m. in the Levy area, specifically Shad Road and S.C. 315. The suspect had been sought after escaping U.S. Marshals in Georgia, according to the Bluffton area newspaper.
“One of my officers saw Lax, jumped out from the area he was stationed in, and caught Lax," Sheriff Chris Malphrus told Bluffton Today. "Lax was too tired to run too far and he was checked out by EMS and transported to the Jasper County Detention Center."
According to the Bluffton newspaper article, Lax also faces charges in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle in Jasper County.
