If you own the home you live in, now is the time to make sure you have signed up for the homestead exemption to get a break on your property taxes this year.
March 1 is the deadline to provide the local tax assessors’ office with the information for your exemption to avoid paying taxes on that extra $5,000 in value, or in some cases, $10,000.
The rules are pretty simple, and the tax assessors’ staff will help you with any questions.
The exemption is only available to Georgia residents who owned their  home and land on Jan. 1.
Members of the military must provide their December LES. You only get one homestead exemption — for your principal residence, no matter how many homes you may own.
Some homeowners, such as those over 62 years old, the disabled and those with household incomes of less than $10,000, are eligible for additional exemptions.
The Liberty County Tax Assessors Office is on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex Building at 112 N. Main St. in Hinesville. The phone number is 876-2823.
