For those who want to participate in the Leadership Liberty program, the sign-up deadline is quickly approaching.
Oct. 1 is the last day area residents can sign up for the 11-session program, which runs from October to July 2010. Tuition is $650.
“Leadership Liberty is designed to inspire positive change in Liberty County through the training of community leaders for public service,” Kenny Smiley, executive director of Leadership Liberty, said. “It’s about understanding the complexities of economic community development as well as appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of our county.”
Smiley said that throughout the program, participants will get the opportunity to visit and study local government agencies and learn about what it takes to run them. He said one of the main goals is to prepare future generations of elected leaders for work with the city, county, board of education and public health services.
The group also will travel to Atlanta to study economic development at a state level and meet with local representatives.
Smiley said the program helps participants make valuable connections and network with people in the area.
“We’re hoping that one day they’ll run for office and turn into an elected official once they’ve got the knowledge of what’s going on,” he said.
According to Smiley, five classes have already graduated from the program, amounting to about 70 alumni, and he said he’s is looking forward to working with the sixth.
“It’s open to anyone who lives or works in Liberty County and wishes to make a difference in the future of community, region and state,” the executive director said. “The program accepts citizens of all ages, races, genders, professions and geographic locations within the county.”
