UPDATE:

According to Hinesville Police Department Capt. Terranova Smith, a man nearly had his car stolen on Feb. 17, when he left the car running while he ran into a convenience store at 7:45 p.m. The man ran into the EnMarket store located at the corner of E.G. Miles and Veterans Parkway to make a purchase and left his vehicle running.

Two teens were later arrested in connection to the incident. The two teens allegedly jumped into the vehicle and attempted to drive off. According to Smith as the teens were backing up the vehicle, they struck a barrier which prevents cars from backing into fuel pumps. The impact caused a little damage to the rear of the vehicle. The teens jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The teens have not been identified due to their age but are facing criminal charges. The 15-year-old, who was the one who allegedly attempted to drive away, was charged with attempted theft, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and improper backing. The 16-year-old was charged with attempted theft, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Two men who were passing by the store jumped into the vehicle and attempted to drive off. According to Smith as the men were backing up the vehicle, they struck a barrier which prevents cars from backing into fuel pumps. The impact caused a little damage to the rear of the vehicle. The men jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the men, however the incident was captured on surveillance video.
