City gives OK to Wawa design plan

Hinesville City Council members are clearing the way for a popular Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain to open its doors here.

Council members gave approval for the chain’s design of its store to be built at 769 E. Oglethorpe Highway. The site is home currently to Golden and Associates accounting firm.

The building will straddle the line between Hinesville and Flemington but the bulk of the property, such as the gas pumps and the store, lies within Hinesville’s city limits. The building’s dumpster and some parking spaces are expected to be on the Flemington side of the line.

Plans call for a limited access from Oglethorpe Highway and full access from Gen. Stewart Way.

There will be a canopy over an outdoor seating area, and the angled canopy over the gas pumps will match the rest of the store.

The design review board gave its approval on April 10.

The Golden and Associates building will be razed to make way for the Wawa store.

Wawa has stores in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia and has plans for nearly 30 more locations in Florida.

Wawa officials announced last fall that the privately-held company intends to open its first Georgia store in 2024. The company will be opening its 1,000th store this week.
