SAVANNAH — Savannah Technical College and the city of Riceboro are partnering to bring adult education/GED classes to area residents beginning this fall at the Riceboro Youth Center on Highway 17.
On Wednesday, Riceboro Mayor Pro Tem Tommy Williams and City Councilman Chris Stacy joined officials from Savannah Technical College to walk through the facility where GED classes will begin Sept. 29.
“We want to bring these classes to the adults in our community to help them do what they didn’t have an opportunity to do when they were younger — and that is to get an education. They want to be able to be a part of the economy and this will certainly help them,” Williams said.
STC Executive Director of Adult Education Charita Boles said the center will accommodate up to 20 students for classes that will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Thursday. “We’ve had steady interest already. Twelve people have already confirmed for the first class. We’ve also had a number of seniors express interest and we’re looking at something specifically for them,” she said.
Currently, the college offers adult education classes on Fort Stewart in the Army Education Center. “This will give those in the eastern part of Liberty County a more convenient place to go,” Boles said.
The facility, built in 2005, has a classroom and computer lab for students to use.
“Having residents educated and ready for the workforce is critically important,” Stacy said. “It will make our communities safer and make them better places to live.”
Savannah Technical College instructors teach adult education classes in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties with multiple locations in each community, including at the college’s campuses in Savannah and Hinesville. For more information or to registration, call 884-4984.
