Students in Liberty County participated in the ninth annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl on Friday, Jan. 23.
The reading bowls started with Liberty County School System Superintendent Dr. Valya S. Lee welcoming the teams and families to the Performing Arts Center. The Bradwell Institute JROTC Color Guard presented the colors at the elementary bowl, and Liberty County High School’s JROTC provided the opening for the middle/high bowl.
The teams participated in six rounds. Each round consisted of 10 questions. The bowl format required students to remember facts from a total of 16 books. Elementary- and middle-school students read books from the Georgia Children’s Book Award nominees, and high-school students read books from the Georgia Peach Book Award for Teens list.
In the elementary competition, Lyman Hall earned first place and Frank Long earned second. In the middle-school division, Lewis Frasier earned first place and Midway Middle earned second. For high school, Bradwell Institute earned first place and Liberty County High School earned second. All three first-place winners advanced to the Southern Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl at Valdosta State University.
