With empañadas on their plates and piñatas ready to burst, Liberty Elementary School students celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday.

Honoring Mexico’s defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, students dined on Latin-inspired food and enjoyed traditional Mexican and Puerto Rican dances performed by members of Fort Stewart’s Hispanic Heritage Club.

Students also drew raffle tickets in hopes of being selected to split open piñatas and collect as much candy as their pockets could hold, though every student received a sweet treat regardless.
