Recently, nine Long County High School students attended a leadership conference in Statesboro.
The student-athletes took part in the First District RESA Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Program, Student Athletic Leadership Conference at Georgia Southern University's Paulsen Stadium.
The students were Donte Brown, Chris Banks, Ted Turner, Jake Durham, Richard Johnson, Jimmy Bacon, Elizabeth Vandervort, Jessica Bryant and Shelby Mock.
They joined more than 200 other participants from all over the state in workshops focusing on drug free sports, community volunteerism, conflict resolution and team building.
In addition to the workshops, the students heard GSU head football coach Chris Hatcher and the American Athlete Institute's John Underwood speak.
The annual event is coordinated by the First District RESA and this year was co-sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration-Atlanta Field Division and the US Attorney General's Office-Southern District of Georgia.
Long County High School athletic director Shawn Peek took the students and said, "This was a good group trip, and I think all of the kids got some good information from the speakers and the workshops."
