MLK panel details student contests

The Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Association recently announced a county-wide coloring contest.
Students in kindergarten, first and second grade in the Liberty County School System, private schools and Fort Stewart schools may enter. Schools may choose three entries to submit and there may only be one winner per grade per school.
All entries must be submitted to Nicole Carter at Waldo Pafford Elementary by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan 7.
Guidelines are
as follows:
• Students must color the coloring sheet provided.
• No joint entries will be accepted.
• Student’s name, grade, school and teacher must be written on the back of the coloring sheet.
• Monetary prizes will be awarded for first ($35), second ($25) and third ($15) place winners.
• Winning entries will be displayed at the youth program on Jan. 15.
 
There will also be a poster contest for students in third through fifth grades in the Liberty County School System, private schools and Fort Stewart schools. The theme is “Back to the basics … saving a generation: education, service and integrity.”
All entries must be submitted to Nicole Carter at Waldo Pafford Elementary by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan 7.
Guidelines are
as follows:
• Completed posters size must be 22 inches by 28 inches only. Posters may be illustrated on the vertical or horizontal axis.
• Student’s name, grade, teacher and school must be on the back of the poster.
• The poster must be the work of an individual student. Joint entries will not be accepted.
• No copyrighted characters may be used.
• Only freehand, drawn letters may be used on the poster design. Lettering should be clearly legible. No stencils, press-on letters or tracings may be used.
• Students may use drawing materials of their choice: colored chalk, crayons, magic markers, felt pens, water colors etc. No computer-generated drawings or clip art will be accepted.
• The theme must be included on the poster and the illustration should reflect the theme. 
• Monetary prizes will be awarded for first ($35), second ($25) and third ($15) place winners. 
• Winning posters will be displayed at the youth program on Jan. 15.

There will also be an essay contest for students in sixth through eighth grades in the Liberty County School, private schools and Fort Stewart schools.
All entries must be submitted to Nicole Carter at Waldo Pafford Elementary by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan 7.
Guidelines are
as follows:
• No contestant information will be listed on the essay pages.
• Attach a cover sheet with name, grade, teacher and school.
• Essay must consist of at least 300 to 500 words. This does not include the title or footnotes.
• Essay must be typed, doubled spaced on white paper. No bindings or special covers. Graphics are not permitted.
• No plagiarism. Identify any quotations or copyrighted materials in the proper way by using a bibliography to cite references.
• Essay must be written on the theme, “Back to the basics … saving a generation: education, service and integrity.” Students should explain how doing the right things through education, serving others and integrity can impact our community and save the new generation. first ($40), second ($30) and third ($20) place winners.
• The winning essay will be read at the youth program on Jan. 15.
• Schools should send the top three essays from each school.

There will also be a multimedia contest for high school students in the Liberty County School System and private schools.
All entries must be submitted to Nicole Carter at Waldo Pafford Elementary by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan 7.
Guidelines are
as follows:
• Choose one of the following: documentary, PowerPoint slide show or digital story/ photo story
• Joint entries will not be accepted.
• Students must do their own work, but may accept advice and guidance from an adult.
• Entries must adhere to all copyright laws.
• Students may use any software to create their project. Projects must include, but not limited to at least three of the following: sound, graphics, animation, text, video and scripting. A minimum of 10 slides is required.
• Projects must be submitted on a CD, DVD or flash drive.
• The multimedia project must be related to the theme, “Back to the basics … saving a generation: education, service and integrity.”  
• Monetary prizes will be awarded for first ($50), second ($40) and third ($30).
• The winning multimedia project will be displayed at the youth program on Jan. 15.
