Dayaa Gray, a seventh-grade student at Midway Middle School, recently won an art competition sponsored by the Liberty Coastal Lions Club of Midway.
Gray’s poster was among more than 50 posters completed and submitted by the students in Beverly Wulforst’s art classes.
Lions Clubs International sponsored the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Posters were judged on originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme “Children Know Peace.”
Liberty Coastal Lions Club President Lil Shurtleff said she was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Midway Middle School.
“It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions,” she said.
Gray’s poster will advance through the district — and possibly state and international — levels of competition.
“Our club is cheering for Dayaa as her poster advances in the competition, and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” said Jerry Leland, secretary of the Liberty Coastal Lions Club.
Locally, Gray, Destiny James, who earned second place, and Chelsey Quinlan, who earned third place, were honored for their participation by the Liberty Coastal Lions Club at Midway Middle School. Their posters will be on a rotating display at local sponsors’ offices at Interstate Credit Union, Dr. Rollin B. Jackson III’s office and The Heritage Bank in Midway and Midway City Hall.
