Liberty County Board of Education member Sampie Smith has tendered his resignation to board Chairwoman Lily Baker, he said.

Smith, who was elected as the board's district 6 representative last November and officially sworn in Dec. 18, cited "personal reasons" for his abrupt departure.

LCSS Superintendent Dr. Valya Lee confirmed that Smith's resignation was effective Feb. 8.

The Courier currently is looking into what steps will be taken to fill Smith's seat.
