On Jan. 11, 2022, the City of Flemington held a ceremony outside City Hall as incumbent and newly elected council members and the incumbent mayor took their oaths of office.

Larry Logan was newly elected and is the first African American to serve on the city’s council. Incumbent Hasit Patel was re-elected and is the first person of Indian descent to serve for the city. Incumbents Gail Evans, Mayor Paul Hawkins, Leigh Smiley and David Edwards also took their oaths of office. Unable to attend in person was incumbent Councilwoman Rene Harwell, who took her oath via a cellphone held by Hawkins throughout the event.

Council and mayor all spoke about the city’s rapid growth and how it was important for the residents of the city to be heard and be allowed to express their thoughts on how the city should progress with various projects. After the ceremony, the mayor and council went into chambers for their regular meeting. During the meeting, council members nominated and appointed David Edwards as their Mayor Pro-Tempore. Logan was named the third signee for city checks.

During the city’s crime report by Sgt. Anthony Gallop, mayor and council discussed the possibility of creating an ordinance to deal with the problem of four-wheelers. Edwards suggested the city look at state laws and also local ordinances in place by other municipalities. He said they’ve been liberal with four-wheelers, but as the city grows, ordinances should be put in place to address those riding within subdivisions.

The mayor and council approved a new business license for a new Beauty Salon called One 11 Beauty Shop at 1705 East Oglethorpe Highway, Suite A, adjacent to the Hydro-Bar.

Mayor and council will be holding a workshop at 3 p.m. today to discuss the millage rates, proposed increase to the hotel/ motel tax and the audio/ video needs for the city. The meeting is at 156 Old Sunbury Road.
