When summer comes around and teens are looking for ways to occupy their time, Youth Expressions Leadership Program and others in Liberty County want underage drinking to stay off the list of things to do.
Youth Expressions and several community leaders will host a “Preventing Underage Drinking” town hall meeting Thursday night to discuss the problems associated with underage drinking and to brainstorm ideas for prevention with parents in the community, said Cassandra Finley, director of Youth Expressions.
“The panelists will be giving a group presentation on drinking but also will be discussing this with the audience,” Finley said. “We want people to show up and ask questions. There will be other communities there, since it’s more of a regional forum.”
Panelists include representatives of Hinesville Police Department, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Recovery Place and Fort Stewart youth services.
Finley has worked on prevention efforts related to teen alcohol and tobacco use in Liberty County for 10 years as part of a grant program. She said law enforcement officials have told her at previous events that underage drinking tends to be more prevalent in the rural parts of the county.
Finley said parents can help curb underage drinking by monitoring their children’s activities and removing access to alcohol in the home.
The town hall meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Snelson Golden Middle School. For more information, call Finley at 312-1957 or e-mail youthelp@gmail.com. For more information on Youth Expressions, go to the Web site at www.youthexpressionsinc.org.
