Funeral services set for longtime tax commissioner

The tributes are pouring in for the long-time Liberty County tax commissioner.

Virgil Jones, 60, died Monday after a long illness. The Midway native had been tax commissioner for nearly 20 years.

“My deepest condolences to the entire Jones family and all of his loved ones,” Rene Ryon Harwell wrote as a tribute on the Dorchester Funeral Home website. “Virgil was the most soft spoken, kind and honorable man I've had the pleasure of knowing for a very long time. He will truly be missed in our community.”

“Virgil was the humblest person that I have met. He will be missed beyond measure,” added Vicky Nelson. 

Funeral services for Jones will be held Saturday, March 2, at the Sam Harris Gym at 2 p.m., with viewing starting at 1 p.m. Viewing also will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. at St. James AME Church on Freedman Grove Road. 

Interment will follow at St. James AME Church on Freedman Grove Road.
