Another big crowd turned out Monday morning for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, staged by the Liberty County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Association.

Herman Baker served as the grand marshal for the parade, which culminated the weekend of events honoring the late Civil Rights leader. Dr. King had close ties to Liberty County, using Dorchester Academy as a retreat and a place to plan.

This year’s commemoration had the theme of “Promoting Unity as We Preserve the Dream.”

St. Luke’s Missionary Baptist Church won first place for its float. Second place went to Cosmopolitan Club and third place went to Cathedral of Praise. There were 47 entries in the parade.

Other activities as part of the celebration included the annual leadership breakfast Saturday morning at the Liberty County East End Complex, a commemorative worship service, a cultural arts program and a musical.
