Need a ride this summer into Savannah? Maybe Glenville or Hinesville? How about just into Ludowici to pick up a few things or out toward Jones Creek to see your grandmother?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, you might be surprised at how easy it is to get a ride.
The Long County Coordinated Transportation program offers anyone an opportunity to get a ride and use their services seven days a week.
“We take people shopping, to a restaurant or whatever. It’s a great program. Most people think we only service senior citizens, but we are here to serve anyone and you won't be able to beat the cost,” Transit Coordinator Christy Walker said.
The buses will pick passengers up and take them anywhere in Ludowici or Long County. They also will take them into Hinesville, Jesup, Glenville and even Savannah.
The Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center and the Department of Transportation fund the program, and its priority has been for the Department of Family and Children Services, mental health and the county Senior Citizens Center.
The service is free to these groups, in regards to doctor appointments and the senior meal program, when scheduled through the organizations.
“We have five buses on the roads and they are here for anyone. All we ask, is that if you are planning to use the service, give us 24-hour notice so we can make sure we get you scheduled,” driver supervisor and dispatcher Mary Hamilton said.
The system operates from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and some examples of the costs are $4.50 to go into Hinesville, Glenville, or Midway. A round-trip ticket to Savannah costs $47 and a ride anywhere in Long County is only $3. Seniors also get a dollar off the $4.50 rate when they go outside the county.
For more information on the program, call 545-2458 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
