HPD makes arrest in possible fatal stabbing

Hinesville police officers have made an arrest in an April 17 stabbing death.

The Hinesville Police Department’s criminal investigations division identified Joel Leggette as a suspect in the case and he has been arrested in connection with the death of Gyran Ward.

According to Hinesville Police Chief Tracey Howard, officers found an unresponsive man shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday morning face down on the ground at the Royal Oaks apartment complex on the 900 block of Pineland Avenue. The man was bleeding from an apparent stab wound. Officers immediately began rendering aid until EMS arrived on scene.

Howard said the man, identified as Gyran Ward, was taken to Liberty Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Legette faces a charge of aggravated assault. Bond has not been set.

While an arrest has been made, this remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional arrests or charges may be forthcoming.
