Liberty library kicks off vacation reading June 2

Children in Chatham, Effingham and Liberty counties can make the most of their summer with Live Oak Public Libraries and the annual Vacation Reading Program.
This year’s theme is “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” and three separate kick-off events are planned.
Children can register for VRP and enjoy shows by some of the area’s most popular children’s entertainers.
Liberty County will host its VRP festival at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Liberty Branch Library in Hinesville. Highlights include Chad Crews and his Safari Show and games for the entire family. The branch is at 236 Memorial Drive in Hinesville.

Other locations
• Effingham County’s VRP kick-off is set for  11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the South Effingham Branch in Rincon. Storyteller Sean Driscoll will headline the program with “World Tour of Tales.”
Activities will also be held in the adjacent Rincon Jaycee Park. The branch is on Highway 21 at 17th Street in Rincon. For information, call 826-2222.
• Chatham County’s VRP Fest will take place from 1- a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Daffin Park. The event will feature Crews and his Safari Show, Nature Gran, The Puppet People at 11:30 a.m., and storyteller Driscoll at (noon).

About VRP
The Vacation Reading Program is scheduled for June 1 through Aug. 17.
Live Oak Public Libraries staff members at the various branches have worked for months to line up special programs at all of the branches. These include “Mad Science,” “Harry Potter Jeopardy,” “Music Makers!” “Worm Squirm,” “Dance Dance Revolution,” “Summer Wildlife,” “It’s a Mystery!” “Manga Madness,” “A Unique Journey Through Savannah,” “World Tour of Tales” and more.
In addition, staff at the library branches have packed their calendars full of events this summer. “Puppet Magic,” “Under the Sea,” “T-Shirt Design,” “Origami,” “Hank the Cowdog,” “Pet Show,” “Sandscapes,” “Daytime Astronomy” and “Jeopardy for Preschoolers” are just a few.

How to participate
Children can pick up a VRP reading log at any library branch and start reading books, comics or graphic novels. After reading for a total of 10 hours, they can return the completed log to any library branch to pick up their VRP prize package.
 
VRP 2007 Prizes
 After children complete their first 10 hours of reading, they will receive:
• Certificate of completion and “Reading Takes You Everywhere” stickers;
• A book of their choice (from the available selection)
• A VRP coupon book worth more than $80 from a variety of businesses;
• A branch prize entry form and a grand prize entry form.
For every 10 additional hours read, the child will receive another branch prize entry form and grand prize entry form.
 First-place branch prizes: $100 gift certificates for Barnes & Noble.
Second-place and third-place branch prizes: $50 and $25 gift certificates for Barnes & Noble.
•  A drawing will be held at each library on Aug. 20. Participants do not need to be present to win. Winners will be notified to pick up their prizes.
Grand prize: A $500 gift certificate for Savannah Mall. The drawing will be held on Aug. 24. Participants do not need to be present to win. Winners will be notified to pick up their prizes.
