A 16-year-old girl from the Atlanta area has died after what police are calling an accidental shooting in Hinesville Sunday evening.

Hinesville Police Chief of Detectives Maj. Cribbs said the girl involved died at Liberty Regional Medical Center and that she was shot about 6 p.m. inside a home in the 400 block of Elm Street. He said there were two teenage girls, the victim and a 14-year-old, home alone at the time. The younger girl was handling a handgun when it apparently discharged, striking the older girl in the face.

Police and EMS personnel tried to revive the teen, but she appeared to be unresponsive as they placed her in an ambulance.

Cribbs said he was told the girl was visiting family members including the 14-year-old here, staying at the residence for a few days. The younger girl was interviewed by police into the night. The 16 year old will be taken to the GBI crime lab in Savannah Tuesday for an autopsy.
