Charges for boys shooting

The stepfather of a Long County child who was fatally shot Saturday has been charged with murder.

According to Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles, Ronald Smith was charged with felony murder for allegedly shooting his stepson Ta’Keith Russell in the chest on June 2. According to Nobles, the shooting occurred about 11 a.m. at their home at Twin Oaks Mobile Home Park in Long County. Nobles said Smith was arrested Thursday and is in jail awaiting his first court appearance.

Nobles said that few details can be released but that a handgun was used. The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and being conducted by his office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Russell, who was 7, was rising third-grader student at Smiley Elementary School in Ludowici.
