Fuel mix up slows city fleet

A mix-up by a fuel transport company temporarily disabled 13 Hinesville vehicles Wednesday.
According to Bobby Ryon with the city’s public works contractor CH2MHILL, the transport trucks pumped diesel fuel into an 8,000-gallon gas tank at the maintenance yard. Conversely, another truck pumped gas in the 8,000-gallon diesel fuel tank.
“We had to take the tanks off-line and drain them,” Ryon said. “None of the vehicles were damaged because right after it happened, a truck turned around and came back as soon as the driver saw he was having problems. I believe a police cruiser and fire department vehicle did the same thing.”
Ryon said pumping fuel from the vehicles was easier than getting it from the big tanks. He said spare vehicles were used in place of the ones with the wrong fuel but that most of the ones affected are already back in service.
