The Liberty Transit public transportation system will offer free rides Wednesday in recognition of Earth Day.

It also will join Keep Liberty Beautiful for the Ninth Annual Earth Day Celebration at the YMCA Soccer Fields in Hinesville from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

“We think it is a good fit to partner with Keep Liberty Beautiful for Earth Day because using public transportation, people save money, help the environment, reduce dependence on gasoline and improve our quality of life,” Liberty Transit general manager Theodis Jackson said.

According to the American Public Transportation Association, U.S. public transportation use reduces the country’s carbon footprint by 37 million metric tons, the equivalent of 4.9 million households using electricity in a year. U.S. public transportation use saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline per year, the equivalent of 900,000 cars filling up every day. Also, without public transportation, congestion costs would have risen by nearly $21 billion.
