TSPLOST gets airings

Two opportunities to learn more about TSPLOST and voice opinions on it are coming up in Liberty County.

Town hall meetings are being held tonight and next Wednesday night by the Liberty County Planning Commission and local officials. Tonight’s meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Savannah Tech on Airport Road. Next week’s meeting starts at 6 p.m. July 18 at the Dorchester Civic Center in Midway.

TSPLOST is a 1 percent, special purpose local option sales tax intended to fund transportation projects. Voters across the state will decide the fate of the proposal at polls on July 31, but as regional questions. Liberty and Long counties, for example, are part of the nine-county Coastal Region, where it could be implemented no matter what happens in other regions.

The TSPLOST referendum was authorized by the Georgia State Legislature through the Transportation Improvement Act of 2010.
