A Liberty County man is accused of killing his mother with a handgun around 4 p.m. Friday while she was driving west on Leroy Coffer Highway.
According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Doug Snider, Nicholas Bacon is charged with murder and aggravated assault for fatally shooting his mother, Montez Bacon, while both were in the car returning from Chatham County.
Witnesses say they saw Montez Bacon signal and turn her into the Fleming Short Cut Gas station, where she hit a small structure near the gas pumps.
When the vehicle stopped Nicholas Bacon got out and began to walk down the road until he was stopped by Liberty County Deputy Geoffrey Harriman, authorities say.
When first responders arrived they found Montez Bacon unconscious and unresponsive.
She was immediately taken to the Liberty County Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, where she was later pronounced dead, according to Snider. Nicholas Bacon’s bond was denied by Magistrate Gerald Morris at a first-appearance hearing Saturday morning at Liberty County Jail.
