A Walthourville couple awoke to a home invasion in progress early Tuesday morning, and the male resident was injured by gunfire.

According to an incident report filed by Walthourville Police Officer Lt. Wade Long, the couple was asleep at their home on Guyton Lane when they were awakened by two men breaking into their residence.

The female resident told Long she was jarred from sleep by noise and, while lying in bed, she saw two armed men wearing dark-colored hoodies standing in the doorway of the bedroom.

The woman said she got out of bed and knelt down. Her boyfriend awoke and asked the men what were they doing in the residence, which is located on a dirt road near Wilder Road.

According to the report, the male resident told Long that a man sporting a goatee fired a shot at him and struck him on the right side of his head and face. Both men fled the residence in a vehicle.

According to the report, the suspects got in by prying open the front door.

The shooting victim was taken by ambulance to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah and is expected to survive.

The Walthourville Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating the suspects. Anybody who might have seen or heard anything or has additional information, should call the Walthourville Police Department 368-6525 or the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office at 876-2131.
