Hinesville was designated as a Purple Heart City Thursday that "appreciates the sacrifices that our Purple Heart recipients made in defending our freedom, and believe it is important that we acknowledge them for their courage and show them the honor and support that they have earned," according to a proclamation signed by Hinesville Mayor Allen Brown.

The Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who die or become wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy. It is awarded posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action.

Brown signed the proclamation surrounded by local veterans and members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 596 from Savannah.

Hinesville is now a member of that chapter, and signs paid for by the Hinesville Military Affairs Committee will be posted in the city.
