According to Hinesville Police Department Detective Doug Snider, a body found in Liberty County near Juanita Road last week still has not been identified. Authorities don’t know if the body is that of Savannah Smith, 22, who has not been seen since June 8.
Smith’s boyfriend, Maurice Newsome, 21, who was arrested June 17 in Atlanta and charged with aggravated assault, appeared before a magistrate judge Wednesday at the Liberty County Jail. He was denied bond. Officials said the assault charge stems from evidence of domestic violence found in the couple’s home.
Results from DNA tests performed to determine the identity of the body found in Liberty County are not yet available, but authorities hope to receive them soon.
“There has been no time frame established, but we’re hoping to get the results back as quick as possible,” Snider said.
Newsome also could face more charges. “We’re waiting on results of the DNA tests to come back and more warrants may be pending,” Snider said.
