A woman was flown by LifeStar to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah with face and head injuries after a five-car pile on Highway 196 Thursday afternoon.
Katherine A. Carter, 24, of Walthourville reportedly hit the windshield of a 1992 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Ronnie Carter, according to Hinesville Police Traffic Accident Investigator Lt. Max McLendon.
The crash closed a section of the highway around Arlington Drive for almost an hour. The intersection is one of several along the West Hinesville highway where residents have complained of congestion and unsafe conditions.
The chain-reaction crash started when Carter's truck allegedly rear-ended the last of three vehicles stopped while the front car waited to turn left onto Arlington.
According to the incident report by Accident Investigator Les Patton, Randall Moss of Ludowici was in his 1996 Ford Crown Victoria properly stopped in the inside lane, waiting to turn onto Arlington.
Brenda Spivey of Hinesville and her young daughter were in a Volkswagen Passat behind Moss. Daniel Albertson of Ludowici was behind Spivey when the Chevy pickup plowed into the back of his car, according to the report.
The impact sent each vehicle into the next. As the dust settled, a 2006 Chevy Impala. driven by Brian Waterford of Hinesville. rammed the back of the S-10, bucking its frame.
HPD traffic investigators Patton, Cpl. Scott Hensler, Sgt. Mike Moody and Jassen Garrett quickly arrived, along with the Hinesville Fire Department and Liberty EMS. Carter was whisked away on a gurney and taken to Willowbrook Drive where the LifeStar helicopter waited.
McLendon said he believes she was not wearing her seatbelt. State law does not require seatbelts to be worn in trucks, if the person is older than 18.
The accident, which occurred around 6 p.m., blocked eastbound traffic on 196 for almost an hour as debris and wrecked cars were cleared. Westbound traffic was detoured for 30 minutes.
McLendon said the accident is still under investigation and charges are pending against drivers Carter and Waterford.
