A 9-year-old boy was critically injured Tuesday when he was riding a bike south of Riceboro and was hit by a pickup.

The child, who has not been identified, was riding near the intersection of Highway 17 and Peter King Road and did not yield right-of-way to the truck, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Lyle Thurmond.

The child was knocked onto the shoulder of the road as his bicycle was dragged several feet. The child was flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah in critical condition. The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m.

Thurmond said the driver will not be charged because of the accident, but was arrested on an outstanding warrant. The trooper said the woman did try to avoid the accident.
