A two-car collision Thursday on Highway 144 in Tattnall County killed five people and left a child in critical condition, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Denney Garner.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. on Ga. Highway 144 about a mile outside of Fort Stewart, near Glennville. An Isuzu Trooper, driven by a male who had a male passenger with him, apparently crossed into the path of a woman driving her three grandchildren in a Chevy pickup truck, Garner said. The woman took evasive action to keep from getting hit, but the Isuzu veered back into the Chevy driver’s lane, hitting the pickup head on.

The driver of the Isuzu was killed and his passenger was flown by helicopter to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he later was pronounced dead. The driver of the Chevy pickup, an 8-year-old female and a 4-year-old male also were killed.

A third minor grandchild, either 10 or 12 years old, who had been riding in the pickup, also was taken by helicopter to Memorial, where he is listed in critical condition. The children are McIntosh County residents. The female Chevy pickup driver was a Tattnall County resident, and the two men in the Isuzu were from Glynn County.
