A man died Monday, and his female passenger was in critical condition, after a single-vehicle accident in Gum Branch Saturday morning.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper. Sgt. 1st Class Robert Balkcom said James Ratliff and his girlfriend, Lisa Allen, 44, of Hinesville, were traveling east on Highway 196 near Stable Road in a 2003 Dodge pickup when for an unknown reason, Ratliff drove onto the shoulder and apparently overcorrected, causing him to lose control of the truck shortly before 9 a.m.

Balkcom said the pickup crossed into the westbound lane and left the road, causing the vehicle to flip over several times before it struck a tree.

Allen was partially pinned under the vehicle. Ratliff and Allen were flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

Balkcom said Monday evening that Ratliff died in the hospital.
