The Liberty County School System is weighing a proposal to put cameras on the stop arms of some of its school buses.
Angel Trax and the school system are looking at installing the cameras on the stop arms of buses that have shown to have had incidents where drivers passed a stopped bus. The technology will capture photographic and video evidence of vehicles illegally passing a stopped school bus that has its warning lights and signs activated.
“I witness vehicles passing the bus with arm out just about every week,” school board member Lavonia Lecounte said.
Angel Trax will review and verify potential violations and a certified Liberty County law enforcement officer will review the evidence and determine if the requirements for a violation have met. Passing a stopped school bus can result in a fine of up to $1,000.
The schools’ transportation department conducted a pilot program and the technology successfully identified several instances of vehicles illegally passing stopped school buses.
Any proceeds from fines would be split between Angel Trax and the sheriff ’s office. The school system will not incur a direct cost for installing the cameras or for the operation of the cameras.
School board members will take up the matter of the five-year agreement at their next meeting.
“I think it’s necessary because our kids’ safety is important,” school board Chair Verdell Jones said.
