Long pond wreck 010817
The car authorities found in a pond in Long County.

Authorities are investigating after the body of a woman was found Thursday afternoon in a car overturned in a pond on Mill Pond Road in Long County.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Markus White said the body of Gladies J. Mccallister, 34, was recovered from the car after it was flipped on its side Thursday by a tow truck.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jamie Quinn said Mccalister's husband, a soldier stationed at Fort Stewart, had been trying to reach his wife since noon Thursday and the call would go immediately to voice mail.

Quinn said a motorist traveling on Mill Pond Road spotted the vehicle from the road and called authorities.

Ray Purcell, a Long County emergency medical technician, found the car upside down around 5:30 p.m. He said attempts by rescuers were made to find out if the vehicle was occupied, but due to darkness a tow truck had to move the vehicle on its side before Mccalister's body was found.
