Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper membership is at an all-time high and the organization welcomed a new board chair, Jim Abbot, during its third annual meeting earlier this month.
Before enjoying a traditional fish fry and covered dish lunch at George L. Smith State Park, members and supporters were welcomed by the outgoing board chair Don Stack. Linda Smith gave thanks for the much needed rain.
After enjoying good food and fellowship, OCRK Executive Director Chandra Brown started an informational session to keep members up to date on statewide initiatives, litigation, volunteer programs and educational programs.
Staff members Melanie Hendrix and Dianna Wedincamp were introduced and recognized for their contributions to the organization.
More than 50 volunteers were recognized for their significant contributions to helping ensure clean water in the rivers.
“We have a large watershed of over 5,000 square miles,” said Brown. “Without the hundreds of volunteers helping us protect the rivers, we would not be nearly as successful. From stream monitoring to trash pickups and office help, volunteers have made us an effective and growing organization for our rivers.”
Stack introduced the new officers for OCRK. Abbot and Smith then presented Stack and John Lewis, outgoing vice chair with awards for their service to the organization and to rivers.
The wooden, carved alligator heads were donated by Tim Goodson. After the membership meeting was adjourned, members enjoyed a relaxing canoe and kayak tour of the spectacular Cypress Lake at George L. Smith State Park.
