SAVANNAH — A Savannah City Council candidate is recovering after being bitten in the face by a dog while he was out campaigning.

Bill Gillespie tells the Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/oh0khN) that he sustained a bruised and swollen face and stitches along his upper lip. He said he's been told the injuries will require follow-up with a plastic surgeon.

Gillsepie says he doesn't blame the dog. He says a homeowner was trying to retrieve the dog, and he made the mistake of grabbing its collar to try and keep it from running off when it bit him.

The bite punctured Gillespie's lip and cheek and tore a flap loose under his nose.

Authorities said the dog is a rescue animal that had been abused.
