Woman charged in fatal wreck

A woman has been charged with homicide by vehicle from the accident that occurred May 24 in Allenhurst which killed her husband and injured another man.

Roxanne West also faces charges of DUI, serious injury by vehicle, weaving over the roadway and driving on the wrong side of the road. The accident caused the death of her husband Keith West, a retired and decorated veteran who had served in Desert Storm, Kuwait, Iraq and later Afghanistan. Also injured in the accident was the driver in the second vehicle, John Shuman.

The wreck happened around 2 a.m. and according to the incident report West was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Oglethorpe Highway. The reports states that West failed to maintain her lane and traveled into opposing traffic. Shuman attempted to avoid the collision but West slammed into the front passenger side of his car. The impact caused both vehicles spin around before coming to a stop.

Shuman was transported to Memorial Health in Savannah. The West couple was taken to Winn Army. Keith West was pronounce dead. Roxanne West was treated for injuries and later charged for the offenses, booked and was released on bail June 5.
